“ユベールは、ハンモックを第六工程ともいうべきほぼ完成の域まで造り上げた毛虫を取り出し、まだ第三工程までしかできていない別のハンモックに入れてみた。するとその毛虫は造巣の第四工程、第五工程、第六工程を素直に繰り返した。ところが、たとえば第三工程まで造り終えた毛虫を第六工程まで終わっているハンモックに入れたところ、すでに大半の仕事が終わっていることを喜ぶどころか大いに困惑し、先に中断させられた第三工程から再びやり直さなければと仕事を再開した。つまりすでに終了していた仕事まで、さらに完成させようとしたのである。” 『種の起源』（上）ダーウィン、渡辺政隆訳（光文社古典翻訳文庫）p351-352
